Birth Control

Rhythm Method

Description

The rhythm method is a natural form of birth control and is the act of attempting to avoid sexual intercourse just before, during and just after ovulation.

Effectiveness

IT can be as high as 90% or as low as 0%, it all depends on how predictable your ovulation period is and is best practiced by married couples who don't mind children but don't actively want them.

Directions

Ovulation occurs about 14 days before the start of a woman's period, keep in mind sperm can live for up to 3 days, and since an egg can stay fertile for up to 3 days, intercourse must be avoided for more than just the day of ovulation. To be safe, a woman should abstain from sex or use contraceptives starting 5 days before ovulation, and ending 5 days after.

Drawbacks

Outside of not protecting you from STD's or STI's, a women must have regular periods for the rhythm method to work, and no woman's period will always be the same, it will at some point change, for some - frequently. This makes it so a a woman may have unprotected sex during a time when she can become pregnant.
